Buloke Woodlands Stewardships - call for Expressions of Interest

Landholders interested in funding for on-ground works to protect Buloke Woodlands on their property are invited to lodge an Expression of Interest with the Mallee Catchment Management Authority (CMA).

The Buloke Woodlands Stewardship program aims to protect and enhance Buloke Woodlands on private land in the southern Mallee.
Buloke Woodlands are an endangered vegetation community and private landholders can play a vital role in their conservation.

The Buloke Woodlands Stewardship Program will help farmers carry out on-ground works that protect their remnants from serious threats.

Funding is available to landholders to help them tackle grazing threats by rabbits and the spread of priority environmental weeds in remnants of Buloke Woodlands.

Funding is available for:
• Rabbit control
• Eliminating priority environmental weeds

Landholders will be paid a price per hectare to reduce rabbit density and environmental weed cover to thresholds set by the Mallee CMA. The minimum price per hectare is $800 and the maximum price per hectare is $1,400. Successful landholders will enter into a three year management agreement with the Mallee CMA.

Grazing by stock can impede the regeneration of vegetation and to participate in the Stewardship program landholders with stock must agree to exclude stock from their Stewardship sites.

The Buloke Woodlands Stewardship program is being delivered in two target areas: the Avoca Basin and the Yarriambiack Creek System (see below). The Stewardship Program is open to anyone who manages land in these target areas.

How to apply

The first step is to complete an Expression of Interest (EOI) form. The expression of interest is a formal requirement; however, submitting an expression of interest does not bind or commit you in any way.

Landholders interested in participating in the Stewardship Program can download an Expression of Interest form here

Once you have completed the form you can:

  • email it to jennifer.mccamley@malleecma.com.au
  • mail it to:

 What happens next?

Once the Mallee CMA has received your Expression of Interest, you will be contacted by Cameron Flowers (Southern Mallee Regional Landcare Facilitator) to arrange a site visit. During the site visit, he will assess the condition of your remnant vegetation, the pest animal and plant threat and explain management options and the Stewardship program.

Landholders can find out more about the Stewardship program and payments scheme here or contact Cameron Flowers (Southern Mallee Regional Landcare Facilitator) on 0427 509 663, or Jennifer McCamley (Coordinator Regional Land Partnerships) on 5051 4529.

This project is supported by the Mallee CMA, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.
